The Ties That Bind: Building the CPR, Building a Place in Canada

The website, The Ties That Bind: Building the CPR, Building a Place in Canada, which was produced in 2010 by the Foundation to Commemorate the Chinese Railroad Workers in Canada in partnership with the MHSO, provides teachers with an introduction and guide to the website; lesson plans with handouts and worksheets; resources that include primary source documents, images (historical photographs, newspaper cartoons), and oral history interviews; an historical timeline; and a bibliography, all of which can be integrated into classroom teaching and adapted to a variety of grades and subject areas. The lesson plans are entitled Primary Source Documents and Visual Literacy, Oral History and Social History, and Exploring Chinese Canadian History. Teachers may also direct students to view segments of the documentary film, The Ties That Bind, which are available on the website, and to explore the six historical themes that the website addresses.
