A MHSO initiative undertaken in 1995, Voices from Memory: The Parkdale Collegiate Integrated Arts Project challenged students to explore immigrant and refugee experiences with older residents in their community. During the course of the project, the MHSO staged workshops for 63 Integrated Arts students at Parkdale Collegiate Institute on the histories of migration to Canada, oral history techniques, and exhibit design, and it guided them in documenting, interpreting and presenting the immigrant and refugee experiences of 23 senior citizens. A storyteller/creative writer was also involved in the initiative. She helped the students add further colour and dimension to the texts that they were creating from the interviews they had conducted. A student-produced exhibit, Voices from Memory, was one outcome of this community-focused heritage project. It was on view in the MHSO gallery from May to December 1995. Another was a student-produced publication, Voices from Memory, published by the Toronto Board of Education.
