From 1923 until after the war, in 1947, Chinese were not allowed into Canada.
Then, regulations kept families in China from being
reunited with husbands and fathers who were here. Jean Lumb was the
President of the Chinese Women's Association for Ontario and in 1956, after
10 years of lobbying the Canadian government, community groups finally met
with the Prime Minister. Jean Lumb told the Prime Minister Diefenbaker,
that it was natural for families to be together -- how dare the Canadian
government keep our families apart! Beginning in 1957, the Canadian government
allowed Chinese men to bring over their wives and children without restrictions.
