In this interview, Sherry Ng reflects on her family’s immigration history, adjusting to life as a Chinese immigrant in Toronto, Ontario, and her education and career in museums.
Born in 1947 in Canton, China, Sherry was the second of four children. Her mother, a kindergarten teacher, raised her and her older sister in China while her father studied in the United States and Canada. She met her father for the first time when she moved to Canada at seven years old. She remembers not being able to speak a word of English when she first moved, but learned quickly with the help of her next-door neighbour.
Sherry studied at the University of Toronto in the East-Asian Program where she majored in Chinese. She recalls her yearning to embrace the Chinese language and culture after speaking English in Canada for so long. She met her husband, a graduate student in the Physics Department, while at University. They were married in 1974. Her daughter, Jennifer, was born in 1977.
After obtaining a Masters in Museum Studies from the University of Toronto, Sherry worked at a variety of museums throughout Ontario. She remembers her time as a mock pioneer in one museum and the museum visitors’ amazement at seeing a Chinese woman play an early Canadian settler.
