‘They gave up themselves for the next generation’: The working lives of Chinese Canadian women

The working lives of Chinese Canadian women are filled with stories of sacrifice and success. Many women gave up their own educational and professional ambitions to raise children and help with the family business. Their sacrifices benefited subsequent generations, who had better access to education and employment.

This exhibition explores the experiences of Chinese Canadian women as workers: homemakers, restaurateurs, doctors, entrepreneurs, and more. Their paid and unpaid labour was crucial to the economic survival of their families and their communities.

Listen to Claire Wong reflect on the sacrifices her parents made in order to provide for their family. click for summary
