Du, Holly

In this interview, Holly Du describes her time in Vietnam, her escape from Vietnam to Hong Kong and then Canada, and her work and community involvement in Canada and Taiwan. Holly describes the conflict between Vietnam and China in 1977 and 1978, explaining that her family fled to China in 1978. She worked on a farm, but was approached about joining the Chinese army, so she fled with her siblings. They immigrated to Hong Kong illegally, and faced many hardships during the voyage. In 1980, she moved to Canada as a refugee, settling first in Nova Scotia and then in Toronto.

Holly describes the plans she made for herself, hoping to attend university and then write professionally. She was comfortable in Canada, and saw opportunity for immigrants in such a multicultural nation. She went to study in Taiwan for a short time in 1984 but ultimately returned to Canada, where she was actively involved in several community organizations.
