Today, Siva is a settlement worker at the Tamil Eelam Society of Canada. In 1983, Canada established a special refugee programme for Sri Lanka. At first it focused on Colombo but later it expanded to include those fleeing northern Sri Lanka. Today, the Tamil community is one of the fastest growing groups of newcomers in Toronto and the Society is expanding to keep up with refugee needs, such as language instruction.
