In Santiago, Maria Angelica worked as a professional actress. She learned English on her own and out of necessity after her husband died, in the course of resettling in Toronto. She retrained as a settlement worker at George Brown College so she might apply her own experience to help the ever-growing Hispanic community in Toronto.
