The Enriquez Family and other Chileans who had taken refuge months earlier in the Canadian embassy, were airlifted to Toronto out of Santiago in early 1974 by the Canadian Forces. After Pinochet's military coup, many Chileans, including Belisario Enriquez, a former professor of English at the University of Chile and a known Allende supporter, were in grave danger. Tragically he died of leukaemia within two years of his arrival in Toronto, leaving his wife, an actress with virtually no English, in a country not of her choosing, with three young children. This year, Maria Angelica Nunez Enriquez, now a settlement worker at the Centre for Spanish-speaking Peoples, helped co-ordinate the centre's 20th anniversary.
