"Project Orphan"
Human Trafficking

The experience of some new immigrants can be fraught with danger.

In 1997, information was received indicating that Asian women, primarily from Thailand and Malaysia, were being smuggled into North America. Under the code name "Project Orphan," Canadian police forces conducted an investigation into this operation which brought Asian women to Canada for the sex industry.

As part of its work on emerging dimensions of immigration, the Multicultural History Society is pioneering research into the disturbing issue of human smuggling.
