Over four million people live in Santiago, the coastal capital city of Chile, against the backdrop of the Andean mountains. Chile was a Spanish colony for almost 300 years, becoming independent in 1818. Its long democratic tradition was broken temporarily in 1973 with the military coup of Augusto Pinochet, and restored in 1989.
