Grade 7-8 Curriculum Expectations

Below is a general guide to the Ontario School Curriculum expectations that Family Stories can support for grades 7-8. Please note that each lesson targets different curriculum expectations; as a result, teachers may customize the lessons to support the curriculum expectations they wish to meet.

Language Arts Expectations:

Reading - students will:
  • read and demonstrate an understanding of a variety of literary, graphic, and informational texts using a range of strategies to construct meaning.
  • recognize a variety of text forms, text features and stylistic elements and demonstrate understanding of how they help communicate meaning.

Oral Communication - students will:

  • listen in order to understand and respond appropriately in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.
  • use speaking skills and strategies to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
  • reflect on and identify their strengths as listeners and speakers, areas for improvement, and the strategies they found most helpful in oral communication strategies.

Writing - students will:

  • generate, gather, and organize ideas and information to write for an intended purpose and audience.
  • draft and revise their writing, using a variety of informational, literary, and graphic forms, and stylistic elements appropriate for the purpose and audience.
  • use editing, proofreading, and publishing skills and strategies, and knowledge of language conventions, to correct errors, refine expression, and present their work effectively.
  • reflect on and identify their strengths as writers, areas for improvement, and the strategies they found most helpful at different stages in the writing process.

Media Literacy - students will:

  • demonstrate an understanding of a variety of media texts.
  • identify some media forms and explain how the conventions and techniques associated with them are used to create meaning.
  • create a variety of media texts for different purposes and audiences, using appropriate forms, conventions, and techniques.

Grade 8 Geography Expectations - students will:

  • identify factors that affect migration and mobility, describe patterns and trends of migration in Canada, and identify the effects of migration on Canadian society.
  • use a variety of geographic representations, resources, tools and technologies to gather, process, and communicate geographic information about migration and its effects on people and communities.
  • connect the real experiences of Canadians to information about the causes and effects of migration.

Grade 8 History Expectations - students will:

  • describe key characteristics of Canada between 1885 and 1914, including social and economic conditions, and the roles and contributions of various groups.
  • compare living and working conditions, technological developments, and social roles near the beginning of the twentieth century with similar aspects of life in present-day Canada.
