Grade 5-6 Curriculum Links

Below is a general guide to the Ontario School Curriculum expectations that Family Stories can support for grades 5-6. Please note that each lesson targets different curriculum expectations; as a result, teachers may customize the lessons to support the curriculum expectations they wish to meet.

Language Arts Expectations:

Reading - students will:
  • read and demonstrate an understanding of a variety of literary, graphic, and informational texts using a range of strategies to construct meaning.

Oral Communication - students will:

  • listen in order to understand and respond appropriately in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.
  • use speaking skills and strategies to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
  • reflect on and identify their strengths as listeners and speakers, areas for improvement, and the strategies they found most helpful in oral communication strategies.

Writing - students will:

  • generate, gather, and organize ideas and information to write for an intended purpose and audience.
  • draft and revise their writing, using a variety of informational, literary, and graphic forms, and stylistic elements appropriate for the purpose and audience.
  • use editing, proofreading, and publishing skills and strategies, and knowledge of language conventions, to correct errors, refine expression, and present their work effectively.

Media Literacy - students will:

  • express opinions about ideas, issues, and/or experiences presented in media texts, and give evidence from the texts to support their opinions.
  • identify whose point of view is presented or reflected in a media text, and ask questions to identify missing or alternative points of view.

Social Studies Expectations - students will:

  • identify some countries with which Canada has links.
  • describe some of the connections Canada shares with the rest of the world.
  • describe some influences of other countries on contemporary Canadian society and the lifestyles of Canadians.
