Siu, Lucia

In this interview, Lucia Siu comments on her early life in China, living in Hong Kong until she was 8 years old, and moving to Canada in 1977 with her husband and 3 children.

Lucia has 3 sisters and one brother, with the brother being the first in the family to immigrate to Canada in 1974. Three of the siblings settled in Toronto, Ontario, and one sister still lives in Hong Kong. Before moving to Canada, Lucia said she did not have an opportunity to learn English, which did pose some problems at first. Lucia reflects on her life in Toronto, and the help she received from her brother.

After studying accounting, typing and word processing, Lucia obtained full-time employment with the TD Bank as a teller, and found some discrimination with respect to promotions. Lucia remarked that at times her limited English skills made her feel shy at work.

Lucia said it was her experience that relations between new and settled immigrants were generally good. She noted she continues to keep many of the traditions of the Chinese culture. While commenting on her children, Lucia said they have all integrated well into Canadian culture, yet they still take part in some of the traditions of Chinese culture.
