Chung, Wendy

In this interview, Wendy Chung describes her life in Hong Kong and Taiwan, her immigration to Canada, and the difficulties she has faced in Toronto, Ontario. Wendy was born in 1958, as the fourth of seven children. She went to elementary and secondary school in Hong Kong, and attended Taiwan Normal University. She remembers disliking living in shared accommodations in a university dormitory, not appreciating her school’s focus on classical literature rather than contemporary works, and having difficulty with the traditional Chinese characters used in Taiwan.

Wendy talks about her early career as a teacher in Hong Kong, and her decision to return to university to get qualifications that would be recognized in Hong Kong. Wendy’s boyfriend resolved to emigrate, because he felt that there was too much pressure in Hong Kong. After being denied entry to Europe, he decided to move to Canada, and settled in Toronto. Wendy joined him, and they married.

Wendy discusses the difficulties they faced in Toronto, focusing on their problems finding work that they enjoyed, and their challenging financial situation. She concludes on a positive note by talking about her work as a church secretary, singling out her co-workers as being supportive and friendly.
