Wong, Mr. and Mrs. G.

In this interview, Mr. and Mrs. Wong discuss their experiences immigrating to Canada from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – their reasons for immigration, their expectations of Canada, the struggle to find jobs, and adapting to differences.

Mr. Wong explains that he and his family shared a comfortable life in Malaysia, but felt compelled to leave due to the disadvantages that political change in the aftermath of Malaysia’s independence created for minorities. After much research, to seek better opportunities for his children Mr. Wong immigrated to Toronto, Ontario, in 1970 and the family followed in 1971.

Mrs. Wong explains that she anticipated the difficulties of acquiring employment in Canada but goes on to say that she and her husband were able to overcome them. Mr. Wong found a position as a labourer and Mrs. Wong’s English skills helped her secure a job with the Ontario Health Insurance Place. The family is now settled in Sudbury, Ontario.

Although two of her children discuss their encounters with racial discrimination in Canada, Mrs. Wong feels that her own experiences of rudeness was not discrimination but rather, incidents of personal behaviour that can be found in all races, including her own. Mrs. Wong shares her advice to her children: to examine themselves for weakness before accusing others of prejudice. She explains that her upbringing in ethnically diverse Malaysia helped her learn how to live with other races.
