Cheung, May

May Cheung was born in Guangdong, China, in 1935. She immigrated to Canada in 1956, settling in Toronto. She has worked for many years as a sewing machine operator. At the time of her interview, she was still residing in Toronto. (Biographical notes from Jin Guo: Voices of Chinese Canadian Women).

In this interview, May Cheung discusses her experiences in China during World War Two, her education and the role of religion in her life. May was born in Hong Kong in 1939 but grew up in the countryside to avoid the war. Her parents were teachers, and the family lived in the school’s residence. After the war, the family returned to Hong Kong.

May attended private schools founded by religious institutions. After graduating from college, she became a teacher herself, while continuing her studies part-time in English. May describes herself as quiet, preferring reading to sports and social get-togethers. She believes that her life improved after she became religious, as this gave her more friends and a social outlet.
